Enter the Tilting Yard through the 'morello red' gate in the high stone wall which separates Cossington Park from the village, and come to the large oak door, bearing carved panels which were brought here from China by my ancestors .
The front door opens into the Hall in the old part of the house, off which the Dining Room and Drawing Room are located. Also off the Hall, there is a downstairs toilet, and two staircases to the first floor, one leading to the bedrooms in the old part of the house and the other to the wing built in 1901 by my great grandfather. Last but not least, the Hall also leads to the main gardens on the south side of the house. At the end of a corridor is the Library , a large and comfortable room. Many of Cossington Park's collection of books are here, as well as a selection of board games and two interesting card tables.
The Drawing Room, Library and Dining Room open onto very extensive and peaceful gardens, which in turn lead to fields beyond. There is little noise other than occasional 'mooing' or 'crowing' from Great Tree Farm next door, named after the former tree opposite, where traitors were hanged after the nearby Battle of Sedgmoor.
There is a large, farmhouse-style Old Kitchen, Breakfast Room (the former Pantry), and Laundry (the former Larder).
The bedrooms and bathrooms are all located on the first floor. Chaucer and The Trusty Servant are in the oldest part of the house. Jolly Monks, The Cobbler and The Pump Room are in the 1901 wing. The Nursery is accessible from both wings of the house. |
